Tooth Colored Fillings
Tooth-colored fillings, which are also called composite or resin fillings, can provide a natural-looking alternative to dark silver fillings. The color of the composite filling material can be shade-matched to blend naturally with the rest of your tooth, making the filling virtually indistinguishable. In addition to providing outstanding aesthetic value, resin composite is very durable and forms a tightly sealed chemical bond with the tooth to keep it strong and protected. Tooth-colored fillings also preserve natural tooth structure because less of the tooth has to be removed when composite fillings are placed.
Replacing Silver Amalgam Fillings with Tooth-Colored Fillings
Many of Dr. Wayde Fawcett’s patients choose to replace their older silver amalgam fillings with tooth-colored fillings for several reasons:
- Strengthen tooth structure – Teeth with metal fillings are more vulnerable to cracking and breaking. By replacing metal fillings with composite resin fillings, which bond directly to the tooth’s surface, the natural structure and strength of the tooth can be restored.
- Improve appearance – Metal fillings can darken the appearance of teeth and may be visible when smiling. Replacing old fillings with tooth-colored resin fillings can brighten the smile and restore the natural white appearance of teeth.
- Reduce tooth sensitivity – Metal filings conduct heat and cold, which can cause sensitivity-related discomfort. Composite fillings can reduce tooth sensitivity caused by temperature changes in the mouth.
- Mercury-free – Amalgam fillings can contain traces of mercury. Resin fillings contain absolutely no mercury.
